Google reviews are the most valuable tools for both customers and businesses. As a result of technological advancement, consumers can communicate more effectively. Anyone can share their opinions publicly by posting google reviews. The Federal Decree-Law No. (34) 2021 on Combating Rumours and Cybercrime makes it important to understand online content regulations. An honest review could face legal consequences under this cybercrime law if it is found to be false, offensive, or defamatory.
Privacy Violation and Defamation: One of the key provisions of the cybercrime law is the prohibition on publishing defamatory material, which includes online reviews. According to Article 44, a person who is found guilty of distributing false information that may lead to the harming or damaging of a person or business’s reputation may be sentenced to fines or imprisonment. This includes overstated or malicious reviews on google, where negative comments against a service or product may be considered defamatory.
Spread of Rumours or Unverified Information: Similarly, customers should not spread rumours or unverified information. If there is a review on google that contains false claims and information and might ruin the reputation of a business, it will fall under the UAE cybercrime law. Article 52 of the same law states that publishing or distributing false or misleading information that harms public or private interests is prohibited.
Types of Extortion and Threats: Some google reviews can be considered extortion, in which individuals threaten businesses with the removal of their review in return for money or services. UAE’s cybercrime law has clearly explained and criminalized such kinds of actions, under Article 16, which deals with online blackmail and threats. Additionally, cybercrime law states that using reviews as an influence for personal gain can also result in severe penalties, including jail time.
Privacy Protection: Another important factor to consider when writing a review on google is privacy. Disclosing personal information about an individual without consent, like the name of the owner or any employee of the business, may be considered a violation of the UAE’s privacy laws and may even amount to criminal liability.
Even though posting google reviews is a useful means for customers to share their opinions, it’s important to understand the legal restrictions on posting in the UAE. Reviewers are required to ensure that their reviews are truthful, and respectful, and do not infringe upon the rights of others. In the UAE, cybercrimes are punishable by penalties that are strictly enforced.
