In my column this week in The National newspaper, I answer several women seeking guidance on the obligations each partner has in marriage including one woman who wishes to live apart from her violent husband. I explain to this woman that there is no concept of ‘separation’ in Islam and that to leave her husband she must be granted a divorce by the Shariah courts – which means she must also have reasonable grounds for divorce. Physical abuse is one such ground, but I explain to the woman she should have evidence, such as medical reports, to substantiate her claim.
